Mountview is a family based school of approximately 190 students nestled in a rural area about 5 kilometers from the downtown core of Williams Lake. The staff at Mountview takes great pride in building a school that meets the academic, social-emotional, and physical needs of our students. Along with a strong curricular focus we also offer a full range of sports for the older students, including both intramural and extra-curricular leagues, and we promote the arts through our music and art programs along with the production of concerts and learning fairs. We have a large playground with two “Big Toys” and a large paved area that is flooded as an ice rink in the winter. There is plenty of space and many activities for our students on their breaks and during their PE classes.
Along with the obvious importance placed on academic progress, Mountview also stresses citizenship and healthy living for all. High standards are set for good behaviour and our Super Kids program, Roots of Empathy program, and Positive Action program help support students in this area. In terms of students’ health we have our Farm To School Salad Bar lunch program which offers all students and staff a nutritious and balanced lunch at a very reasonable cost every Tuesday and Thursday. We also have a daily healthy canteen, we sell white milk daily, we run a daily breakfast club and we are part of the Province’s “Fruit and Veggies in the School” program which sees fresh fruit and vegetables brought into the school every few weeks. Mountview is also a “pop free” school and discourage this and unhealthy snacks/lunches for our students. For the “Physical Activity” portion of our Healthy Living curriculum, students are very active during the breaks and every child receives 30 minutes of PE instruction daily. The staff at Mountview not only models citizenship and healthy living they actively promote it by supporting all initiatives in these areas with direct participation and with teaching lessons that emphasize these goals to all students. Healthy children are happy children!
Mountview is very lucky to have many extremely active parents involved in our school. Parents are frequently at Mountview helping with classroom projects, reading with students each morning, helping coach after school sports teams, helping with the flooding and cleaning of our ice rink, helping with activities such as Fun Day and the Terry Fox Run, and helping run our Farm To School Salad Bar program, to name a few. We also have a very active and involved Parents’ Advisory Council who not only help out in the school but also help raise extra funds for our students. Things like buying extra books for our Library, helping with field trip costs, covering the costs of yearly swimming lessons for our K-4 students and the bussing for two skiing trips for our Grade 5 & 6 students, helping support our Buddy Reading program, helping support our SuperKids program, purchasing extra sports equipment, and supporting technology in education are but a few examples of what they fundraise for. Without the tremendous support and help we receive from our parents we could not accomplish all that we are able to for our students.
Mountview, not unlike all schools in the Cariboo-Chilcotin School District, is reflective of our community, inclusive of all our citizens, and it is also reflective of where we live. Mountview is a friendly, caring and active school that utilizes the great outdoors for our teaching and for the learning experiences of our students while stressing family and societal values while building a sense of belonging that includes all of our community members; students, staff and parents. We are all very proud of our school and work hard to make our school community the best it can be.
